What a great year...

We jammed,

created gas shortages,

played dress up,

played some Wii,

looked sharp,

undermined the race officiation process,

slept... a lot,

played some foosball,

got really aero,

broke the speed limit,

no comment...

and we scared some shoppers while we were at it.
What a great season. Somehow or another, we actually found time to fit some bike racing in.
Until next year, keep the rubber side down.

First off, thank you to everyone who made this year a success for the team. Thanks to our sponsors, our generous host houses and host families, and the race organizers that made this year's collegiate season run smoothly.
We had a good year of racing and team bonding. Congrats to Chris Swan on placing well at Mt. Hood - we just wish he'd been around to race with us during the collegiate season. The season ended well with a team BBQ and a bit of bike jousting. Many of us will be around during the summer doing some racing, while others will be headed home out of the state.
Next year looks to be incredibly promising. We're slated to host a collegiate road race and team time trial, we have some good sponsor prospects, we've lined up a coach, and we're looking into tackling a project of bringing "The Tour, Baby" to Eugene this winter as a fundraiser for Parkinsons research, collegiate cycling, and our team.A big goal is secure sponsors during this summer and early in the fall, so if you know individuals or companies that might be interested in sponsorship, please contact us.
On a final note, we'll be making a team jersey order in the fall, and this order is open to the public, so if you'd like to sport a UO kit or buy one as a gift for a friend, contact us and we'll get you in on the order.

This past weekend we had two riders at collegiate nationals. The races occurred in Lawnrence, Kansas. Due to flooding from storms, a part of the road race course was diverted onto gravel, and they decided to make the first time through the gravel neutral. In the women's division I road race, Lisa Turnbull had an unfortunate situation occur when she flatted at the end of the gravel section and the race director let the racing continue while she waited 10 minutes for a wheel change. In the criterium, she dropped her chain, which ended her race early. In the men's division I road race, Orion Berryman avoided flatting (something like 50 out of 150 riders flatted, many of them in the second lap when the race wasn't neutral). He rode strong but cramped up a few miles from the finish and placed a respectable 49th. In the criterium, Orion placed well, taking 22nd, right at the front of the main field sprint behind a 10 man break-away.
Overall, it's been a fun season, and now those of us in Oregon over the summer will be showing up at OBRA races from time to time. We'll see you out there.New Photos/Nationals

Check out our image gallery for a few photos of Whitman and Montana State. Hopefully we'll have some photos up from conference championships soon.
Also, wish Orion Berryman and Lisa Turnbull luck as they head off for collegiate nationals this weekend in Lawrence, Kansas. They're both strong and have the potential to produce some good results for the team.

This last weekend we wrapped up the collegiate racing season at the NWCCC Conference Championships in the Moscow, Idaho area. Sorry to say, we didn't qualify for nationals as a team this year, but we are sending two individual riders to represent the team. The A men's road race played out differently than it has the past two years on the same course. On the largest climb in the second lap, several riders went to the front to push the pace, and the field completely shattered. The lead group was three riders, followed by a chase of six, followed by two more chases of three and four. Everyone else was on their own off the back. Things stayed pretty much that way for the last 35 miles.
In the criterium, I had chest pains in the first several laps, which it turns out sounds like irritation in the lining of my lungs possibly as a result of pushing myself too hard in high elevation in Montana a week ago. I dropped out, and that may have ended up being a good thing as the rest of the race turned into a crash-fest. there were 3-4 individual crashes, someone had a pedal fall off, and there was a large crash coming into the final corner of the race. The good news about that race was that Takuya, having recently upgraded to As, hung in for the entire race. He'll be an even stronger rider next year.
As a whole, the outlook for next year's team is really good. We have most of our riders returning, and we've got a whole year to get a lot stronger. We didn't have any standout A riders (everyone had ups and downs), but everyone produced results. With another year of training under our belts, our A riders will all be a threat in next year's races. A major goal for next year is to fill out our team by increasing the size of our B and C teams. We were fairly top heavy this year (though our C men provided most of the entertainment). Overall, the season was a lot of fun (see below).

Now it's back to OBRA racing, where, after a bunch of racing with cat 1s, 2s, and 3s, I'll be seriously sandbagging as a cat 4. I've got Silverton pegged as the race where I'm going to try to get my Cat 3 upgrade. Go ahead, try to stop me.
Stay tuned for a special feature: the collegiate season in pictures!Extra kits for sale!

The road race didn't go any better.

After one of the poorer weekend performances in recent history, we now sit in 3rd place in the division I standings, having been overtaken by Oregon State. The trip itself was fun, but we got so few points this weekend we may as well have stayed home. I don't think any of us were prepared for the 4500+ foot elevation difference, but I'm not sure what we could have done differently to prepare. In the A road race, we stopped to wait for a downed rider a few miles in, but this meant we had to chase the PSU rider who was way up the road. One by one we dropped off the speedy paceline, and I dropped on a hill after taking a pull a bit too hard. I caught back on, but decided to drop back and wait for the rest of the guys to see about TTing everyone back. We called it quits after a lap and decided to pack up.
Congrats to C-man Karl for showing all us A men how it's done this weekend with two solid performances.
Altitude does not agree with us.

Today was miserable. We're sick, we're tired, and out of 20 starters in the men's A field, we took 16th through 20th. Ouch. Hopefully there will be better news tomorrow, assuming we can actually convince ourselves to show up and race.
Looking forward to a 15 hour drive

This weekend we're racing in Bozeman, Montana, which means leaving on Thursday and getting back Monday morning (instead of leaving Friday returning Sunday night). The schedule for races is a bit different, with the criterium and road race swapped. The consensus seems to be that this could be a good thing, allowing for fresh legs for the criterium, which will make for a fast, fun race. The road race Sunday may or may not be decided on the final climb. It really depends on whether or not the A field lets a break go again with the same rider that has been in almost every break (or in some cases has been the break). He's a strong rider, but I think it'd really make things less repetitive if we could keep him with the group for even a single race.
That's one of the problems with the qualification system for road nationals - division I and division II points are separate, so our goal to qualify for nationals means we're more concerned with what other division I schools are doing within races than we are with the overall outcome of the race. I'd be happy to sit up front and work to bring a break of division II riders back, but I don't because it's not in the best interest of the team. I'm not sure there's a good solution to this problem, but it means the dominant division II teams win races while the division I teams fight for overall points with lower placings.
